Our Story

Baking fresh breads and treats with wholesome ingredients in Portland Since 1994

Since 1994, Big Sky Bakery has been baking breads and sweets in the old Engine 8 Firehouse at Woodfords Corner in Portland, Maine.

Although we’ve added many new breads and sweets over the years, one thing that has not changed is our commitment to scratch baking and all natural ingredients. All our products are shaped by hand by our bakers, who arrive at 3 am each morning to turn on the ovens and begin the mixing and baking process. We have a stone mill in the bakery and have been milling organic hard red wheat berries we’ve been getting from the same farms in Montana since day one. Our fresh whole wheat flour is used in a wide array of products, including breads, cinnamon rolls and cookies.

Our cafe menu is built around our delicious breads. We use our English muffins for our breakfast sandwiches, and several of our most popular breads for the sandwiches and paninis on our lunch menu. We also bake 9 varieties of our own sourdough bagels daily. Whether you’re looking for bread for your kid’s PBJ, a baguette with dinner or challah on Friday, we have them all! We invite you to stop by and see what’s coming out of the oven!

Kids Rule at Big Sky!

In fact, we have a special kid’s table at our Firehouse location with dough and baking tools for beginner bakers (kids and kids-at-heart!). The kid’s table is OPEN again!

Online ordering available for breakfast sandwiches and our lunch menu.
